GIS for Regional Mapping
Geographic Information System (GIS) applied to integrated spatial analysis supported by socioeconomic data, aimed at territorial development, in the industrial area, on a regional scale.

The project consists of applied research focused on the development and improvement of a Geographic Information System (GIS) whose use is intended to support integrated spatial analyses based on social and economic data. This research will objectively design an institutional GIS for immediate use in public administration, addressing functional aspects related to territorial development on a regional scale.
Given the coordinator's significant experience in the field of Digital Mapping, including investments in applied research involving the urban plan of the Açu Industrial and Port Complex (CIPA), where spatial transformations were identified as important elements in understanding the environmental and economic impacts of the complex's projects (port, ore pipeline, steel mill, bulk yards and terminals, cement plant, thermoelectric power plant, special ethanol storage yard, access point, steel products terminal, Liquefied Natural Gas terminal, etc.) in northern Rio de Janeiro state, this project was proposed, the execution of which was based on what has already been done in that region.
Digital mapping supported by GIS allows for enhanced management of industrial projects based on territorial units, offering strong opportunities for technological innovation, both in the GIS tool itself and in its application within public platforms. Based on data from the IBGE (PNAD and POF), it is possible to affirm that the implications of local and regional projects (Seropédica and surrounding areas) will necessitate advance studies on relevant aspects of land occupation and use, for example. This goal can be achieved through institutional GIS, with intensive and widespread use in the field of industrial development and its branches: basic, processing, extractive, light, and heavy.

This research aimed to objectively design an institutional GIS for immediate use in public management, focusing on functional aspects related to territorial development on a regional scale. The methodology will be developed focusing on the spatial representation of dynamic aspects of the location, extent, and distribution of industries currently established in the western portion of the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region.
A requirements analysis was conducted for the GIS project and its basic query and update services, where textual and numerical data will be linked to geographic features. The behavior of the mapped geographic objects was also considered, given their dynamic nature.
Given the concentration of engineering works in the municipalities of Seropédica, Itaguaí, and Rio de Janeiro, the SIG will address the economic impacts of large projects, highlighting: the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Ring Road; other works from the Federal Government's Growth Acceleration Program (PAC); Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (CSA); Casa da Moeda; the port of Sepetiba; the FURNAS/Santa Cruz Thermoelectric Power Plant; and works related to the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Cup.
